The History of The Aluminaire House

  • The Reboli Center for Art and History 64 Main Street Stony Brook, NY, 11790 (map)

As part of the Figure and Form exhibition, the Reboli Center's Englebright Gallery will feature a special sub-exhibition by artist Frances Campani, highlighting the incredible journey of the Aluminaire House. Designed by architects Lawrence Kocher and Albert Frey for the 1931 Architectural League Exhibition, the Aluminaire House became a pioneering example of modern architecture. For 37 years, Campani and her collaborator, Michael Schwarting, fought to save and preserve this iconic structure, which had been threatened with demolition in 1987. Through their dedication and efforts, including dismantling and reconstructing the house with the help of architecture students, they ultimately secured a permanent home for Aluminaire at the Palm Springs Art Museum in 2020. This sub-exhibition will showcase their remarkable story of perseverance and the house's lasting impact on architectural history.
