Feature Artisan of the Month | John Hunt - Ceramics

  • The Reboli Center for Art and History 64 Main Street Stony Brook, NY, 11790 (map)

This March, The Reboli Center for Art and History is honored to showcase the compelling ceramics of John L. Hunt, an accomplished artist whose diverse body of work blends technical mastery with a deep passion for creative expression. Based in St. James, New York, Hunt has spent decades honing his craft in both painting and ceramics, creating pieces that resonate with elegance and thoughtful detail.

A graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago with a Master of Fine Arts in oil painting, Hunt's career has spanned over fifty years. His journey began with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in oil painting from New York State University at New Paltz, where he also developed his passion for ceramics. From his early work as an illustrator for Playboy Magazine in the 1970s to his solo exhibition One-Man Show in Chicago and many juried shows in NY, Hunt’s artistry has always been deeply rooted in both the classical and the contemporary.

Throughout his career, Hunt has balanced his fine arts practice with various professional roles, including as a business owner and display designer, while never losing his focus on his artistic growth. His work is noted for its careful attention to form and color, whether in his oil paintings or his ceramic pieces.

“It is apparent Hunt strives to bring depth into everything he creates, whether on canvas or through the tactile process of clay,” shares The Reboli Center’s Director when asked about Hunt’s featured body of works. “The work is a clear reflection of his multifaceted talent. His pieces aren’t just art… they are a functional testament to a lifetime of dedication to his craft.”

Hunt’s passion for the arts has also led him to become an instructor at The Brick Clay Studio in St. James, where he continues to inspire others. His love for teaching and sharing his skills mirrors his approach to art—encouraging others to find their own voice through creative expression.

Throughout March 2025, all visitors to The Reboli Center will have the unique opportunity to explore Hunts featured collection of expertly crafted ceramics. Visitors can both enjoy viewing and purchasing pieces from this unique collection. The Reboli Center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11am - 5pm and Sunday from 1pm - 5pm, and we are always free to visit. We are closed on Mondays.
