May's Feature Artisan of the Month: Leslie Cavell

  • The Reboli Center for Art and History 64 Main Street Stony Brook, NY, 11790 (map)

Leslie Cavell Trimble has been immersed in the world of art since she was just two years old, a journey that would naturally lead her to a career in pottery. Originally from Flint, Michigan, Leslie’s artistic path was shaped by her early years in Detroit and her time at Western Michigan University, followed by experiences in cities like Dowagiac and Kalamazoo, Michigan. However, it was in North Carolina, at the age of 35, that she discovered her true calling, pottery, and she’s been passionately creating ever since.

Now, with over 47 years of experience in the craft, Leslie has built a career centered around beautiful, functional pottery. Her pieces are known for their durability and versatility; everything she makes is food-safe, microwave and dishwasher-friendly, and oven-safe. Leslie’s work is as much about practicality as it is about artistry, with each piece reflecting her love for the craft and the satisfaction she finds in creating objects that will be cherished in homes for years to come.

Leslie credits her love for pottery to the influence of her uncle, for whom she was named, a remarkable engineer whose tenacity and passion for his work served as a guiding light in her life. Leslie often reflects on how her uncle, who worked until the age of 91 and continued to create art until his passing, set a standard for endurance and creativity, one she aspires to meet every day. “He set a real high bar for me. I love doing the work and people like my pottery and buy it and then I have to make more. Keeps me in shape and keeps me thinking. Good formula for life...”

Throughout her career, Leslie has lived and worked in various places, including Indiana, North Carolina, and New Mexico, where she has met countless potters and continuously honed her craft. But no matter where life has taken her, Leslie’s passion for pottery has remained constant, and it is this devotion that makes her work so captivating.

Her pieces are sought after for their timeless beauty and functionality, and she takes great pride in knowing her pottery brings joy to others. "I loved every second of doing it," Leslie shares, reflecting on her lifelong journey in pottery.

Today, Leslie continues to create pottery that is both artistic and practical, living proof of the power of passion, dedication, and a lifetime of artistic exploration. We are honored to feature Leslie Cavell Trimble as our Feature Artisan of the Month for May 2026.
