Growing up on the Brooklyn waterfront during the era of “The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau,” Alan’s lifelong connection to the sea began early. Even as a child, he could be found at the end of a pier in Sheepshead Bay, often in the cold-experimenting with homemade inventions to explore and understand the ocean. By age fifteen, he had even built a one-man wooden submarine in his parents’ apartment.

That early curiosity set the course for a remarkable creative journey. Alan went on to study Biological Science at SUNY Stony Brook, learn boatbuilding, and pursue a variety of marine-inspired inventions. In 1999, he fulfilled his boyhood dream by building Explorer, a one-person submarine with a working depth of 350 feet. That same year, he created his first mechanically animated tide clock, a now-iconic design that displays the changing tides in real time and is sold worldwide.

Alan’s kinetic tide sculptures and tide clocks continue his lifelong mission to create a tangible connection between art, science, and the natural world. His work has been featured in Forbes, Coastal Living, and numerous television segments, and he is a proud member of the Explorer’s Club in New York City.

During his presentation, Alan will share stories from his adventurous life, discuss the inspiration behind his work, and reflect on how art can reveal the hidden rhythms that shape our world. Guests will have the opportunity to ask questions during a Q&A following his talk.

As part of the evening, Alan will also be celebrated as The Reboli Center’s November Artisan of the Month for the month of November, 2025, with his unique creations available to view and purchase in the Design Shop and Main Gallery.

As with all of our Third Friday Specials, this event is free and open to the public, with no reservations required. Seating is first come, first served. Doors open at 6:00 PM, and the presentation begins at 6:30 PM. Guests will enjoy shrimp cocktail, seasonal treats, fresh fruit, and other light refreshments while exploring the current exhibition and the Design Shop.
